In this interview, conducted via email, Gay talks about finding feminism in unlikely places, the need to take care of ourselves and her unabashed love of all things Ina Garten. Gay will also interview Erica Jong at the keynote event Friday night, appear on the State of Publishing for People of Color panel Saturday and give a reading and talk on Sunday. Among them are Celeste Ng ("Everything I Never Told You") and James Hannaham ("Delicious Foods"). The AJC Decatur Book Festival invited Roxane Gay to curate a selection of authors to appear at the Labor Day weekend event. After an hour or so, you’ll see the author of “Bad Feminist: Essays” and “An Untamed State” taking on not just the pop culture narratives that dominate so much of social media, but her own biases, fears and joys.īut it’s her full-length essays, exploring what it means to be fully engaged with the world and the culture around her, that have garnered this novelist, critic and associate professor of English at Purdue University a devoted following. Much more often, she’s neither of those things. Odell can read at times like a therapist or self-help author. It is the kind of hypothetical reframing away from unhelpful nostalgia and nihilism that a therapist might pose or one might read in a self-help book. But it makes it feel more like a field of possibility in which many paths are possible. “Like, it doesn’t make the future less scary. “How would that change how you felt about ?” she asks when our conversation goes toward a chapter in which she challenges readers to imagine being born in the exactly right time. It is a kind of compendium on time itself, one that attempts to take a less depressing and deterministic view of the climate future. Where How to Do Nothing was a treatise on redirecting one’s time away from the productivity-industrial complex and toward some stronger stuff, Odell’s latest goes even wider. It was just days before the publication of her new book, Saving Time: Discovering Life Beyond the Clock, her follow up to her 2019 bestseller How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy, the accidental book of the pandemic. “What if you imagined that, actually, you were born at the exact right time?” Jenny Odell, artist and author, poses on a video call from her home in Oakland, California, pausing briefly to smile. Up until I was in middle school (seriously!), my mother read to my siblings and me every night. But the book ends on a hopeful note, as the town returns to normal: the image of new trees growing and a sign reading “353 days left before Christmas”. This book is also unique in its portrayal of what happens after Christmas: it shows the reality of cleaning up the house, putting away decorations, and even some sad pictures of discarded wreaths and Christmas trees. It goes on to show the joy and excitement of Christmas Day: presents, meals with family, being together in celebration. But the book contains more than the typical preparation for Christmas: it also shows the family visiting and bringing gifts to elderly neighbors, donating to a toy drive, making and sending Christmas cards (that might be a novel idea to some children today!), setting up the nativity scene, and going to worship services. The pictures go on through all of the usual preparation for Christmas: gift-buying, decorating, cooking meals. The book goes through the holiday season with one family in the town they live in, and begins with them shopping under a sign that reads “12 days til Christmas”. This book doesn’t have any text at all-which might seem like a challenge at first glance, but once you look at gloriously detailed, colorful and lively artwork, you realize that truly a picture is worth 1,000 words! One of my favorite Christmas books is the aptly titled Peter Spier’s Christmas!. Shades of Labyrinth and Six of Crows mix with Korean mythology to combine a lush and immersive fantasy world (and.that was pretty much all I needed to hear!) The story of a teen assassin forced to work for her kingdom’s most dangerous crime lord in order to protect her younger sister, she finds herself at risk when she attracts the attention of a dangerous immortal known as a dokkaebi-a Korean goblin-and will have to use all her deadly skills to survive. (Think Elizabeth Lim’s gorgeous Six Crimson Cranes duology, Axie Oh’s magical The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea, and Kat Cho’s addictive Gumiho series.) And Sophie Kim’s debut novel Last of The Talons sounds like it’s going to be another thrilling release in this vein. Stories based on Korean legends and mythology are suddenly popping up all over in the world of YA fantasy- in all the very best ways. But when Grey goes missing without a trace, leaving behind bizarre clues as to what might have happened, Iris and Vivi are left to trace her last few days. People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous.īut now, ten years later, seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow is doing all she can to fit in and graduate high school on time-something her two famously glamourous globe-trotting older sisters, Grey and Vivi, never managed to do. They have insatiable appetites yet never gain weight. Then, their blue eyes slowly turned black. Ever since they disappeared on a suburban street in Scotland as children only to return a month a later with no memory of what happened to them, odd, eerie occurrences seem to follow in their wake. Iris Hollow and her two older sisters are unquestionably strange. A dark, twisty modern fairytale where three sisters discover they are not exactly all that they seem and evil things really do go bump in the night. There is an abandoned four year ill whose somehow involved but with a deeper story yet. There are two dead boys frozen in a lake and a story of human trafficking that is heartbreaking. Three will converge in the end for a blockbuster of an ending. There are two major plots and a few minor plots going on simultaneously. The victim of a kidnapping and hostage for three years she has a unique understanding and insight to body language of both abused and abuser. Jude Fontaine is a damaged woman who is also a homicide detective. It doesn't delve into the real meat of the story. The publisher's summary gives a very good overview and you can go with that. If you choose to listen to this book first it will work as a stand alone. For anyone who hasn't listened to the previous books I would suggest listening to them before this one if you want the full impact of this story. This is the third book in the Jude Fontaine series.
